Ushuaia Steak House – Santa Monica

Ushuaia Argentianean Steakhouse located on Wilshire Blvd. in the old Drago space offers Argentinean food with a flair.  The three owners have two other successful Argentinean restaurants called “Malbec” in Toluca Lake and Pasadena but what makes Ushuaia so special is the attention to detail.

All the wine at Ushuaia is from Argentina with bottles ranging from $40 to $150.  Also, they have an extensive cocktail list with fun drinks that contain a touch of South America as well.  The Mendoza Sour is a delicious blend of juices with a jigger of whiskey creating a fresh take on the bourbon sour from the states.

For starters, the Baked Provolone in a skillet is a decant delight or fresh Chorizo Sausage made from a local purveyor exclusively for the restaurant.  The sausages are served with a white bean salad which pairs nicely together.  The Empanadas are another favorite way to start a meal at Ushuaia.  The spinach and ricotta or the chicken and beef empanadas are lightly fried with a flaky crust – they go great with a cocktail.

The salads are plentiful at Ushuaia.  The Spinach Salad with hefty slices of Roasted Mushrooms, Crispy Bacon and Apples all gently tossed in a warm, not too greasy, viniagrette.  This is a great way to cleanse your palate before your steak arrives.  Other great salads include a new Beet Salad just added to the menu with Boston lettuce and Gorgonzola cheese or an Arugula Salad with radcchio, kalamata olives and shaved parmesan.

As for steak, this is where they excel.  There are many to choose from with different combinations of dipping sauces.  The Flat Iron Steak with Malbec Reduction is a house favorite but, if you venture into the  “Grilled Section”  you can’t go wrong with a 14 oz. Rib Eye with sides of Salsa Mia, Salsa Criolla and Chimichurri.  Their steak is so tender and juicy and grilled to your liking.  Each sauce adds another level of “interesting” to the meat and it is just plain fun trying the different combinations of flavors.

Ushuaia is a great addition to the Westside of Los Angeles.  Ushuaia is open for dinner nightly and lunch Monday through Friday.
