Chef LeFevre has opened a 35-seat fresh seafood restaurant in Manhattan Beach called Fishing with Dynamite. His success with M.B. Post, his Gastro Pub just down the street are obvious and this space with the raw fish edge are holding strong on reviews too.
Besides raw seafood options, Fishing with Dynamite offers strong cooked menu items which are just as delicious. For lunch, the menu has hand written specials of the day as well as standard items that they prepare daily.
Each dish is served in the “small plate” format which opens it up for sharing with fellow diners. The Arctic Char Salad Lyonnaise was out of this world. One of my favorite salads is Frisee with Lardons and Poached Egg, but this creation brought the salad far beyond my traditional expectations. The crunchy skinned Char was served medium rare and the fresh soft egg when cut open, enhanced the salad dressing. The poached potatoes and crispy chips made the dish texturally beautiful.
The Coleman Farms Black Kale with Chili Flake, Parmesan and Lemon was cooked perfectly and seasoned the way kale needs to be with flavors that pop. My dad who isn’t a huge kale fan thought it was delicious.
The Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos with in-house corn tortillas, shredded cabbage, guacamole and salsa verde were also good. The tortillas tasted freshly made and the salsa had the right acidity. My only suggestion would be a little more Mahi Mahi in my tacos to celebrate the flavors of the fish, otherwise they were great.
For dessert – Key Lime Tart with Toasted Meringue — this is not to be missed.
