Sprinkles Cupcakes has opened a pizza place on San Vicente in Brentwood, called Pizzana in partnership with actor Chris O’Donnell. The space is small with an even tinier patio, but the smells of wood burning pizza permeates the place. The chef is a friend of the Nelsons, who was born and raised in Naples, Italy. Pizzana prides itself on farm-to-table ingredients, including tomatoes grown in San Marzano on their plot of land, just for the sauce and flour milled in Venice Italy. The style of pizza in a hybrid between Neopolitan and California, not quite as soft and fork tender as the pizza in Naples.
The staff is super friendly and attentive offering suggestions on menu items and wine. The Burrata in the Burrata Salad is also imported from Italy, with a nice rich creamy texture. The combination of crusty bread with drizzle of pesto and roasted cherry tomatoes — nice with the delicate cheese, a great way to start.
Wood-fired Romanesco Cauliflower with tomatoes and bread crumbs was outstanding. The veggies had the perfect al dente texture and the flavors – simply satisfying.
As for the pizza, some of the best crust in the city – light, but with a slight chew and charred in the perfect places. I loved the Funghi Pizza with assorted wild mushrooms – earthy at its best! There are at least 20 pies to choose from, so you definitely won’t get bored with the menu. Gluten-free dough is also available.
Pizzana is a sure hit in this pizza loving neighborhood and rumor has it, that they plan to expand with multiple locations in the near future. Enjoy!
