Road Trip from Arizona through Southern Utah – Day 2 and 3

After reaching our horse motel in pitch dark — it was quite challenging to figure out where the stalls and RV hookups were located.  The rookie RV experience began our first night when we turned on all the power including both air conditioning units and blew the fuse.  Needless to say, it was a very hot night with no AC in Kingman, Arizona.

Headed for a quick shower (check out the notice on the bathroom door) before heading out for breakfast – just down the road in Seligman at the Roadkill Cafe and Ok Saloon off route 66. The parking lot was a museum in itself with decorated barrels, a retro jail, and western village — lots of signage with Roadkill Cafe monogrammed on it. It had vibes of Knott’s Berry Farm when I was a kid, but with a little more exotic animal inserted into the marketing.

The menu was a humorous description of breakfast items with roadkill titles that didn’t sound very appealing, but in reality were classic diner dishes that most are very familiar. My breakfast burrito with chorizo or Armadillo on the Half Shell was grand in size and stuffed full of spicy sausage and scrambled eggs.  I added the green habanero hot sauce to each bite with delight, just in case there may have had real roadkill inside (kidding).  The other dish was classic fried chicken and waffles with gravy served on the side and home-style potatoes, which were extra crispy — just the way I like them. The coffee, Farmer Brothers, never disappoints, especially after a very warm and mostly sleepless night.

Off to Winslow Arizona to stand on the corner and hum “Take it Easy” by John Fogerty and take advantage of a quick pick opportunity next to the flatbed Ford. Small town fun that’s all about a good photo op. There were a few cute shops along the main drag stocked with lyrical gifts for tourist like us.

As we drove through Navajo Nation towards Southern Utah the pink-hued mountains surrounded the small Indian villages.  I wondered if one becomes numb of its beauty after years of delight — I sure hope not. A group of horses crossed the highway as we cascaded through the hills — not sure if they were pets or wild, but wonderful to observe.

After hours and hours of driving, while towing a horse with frequent water and carrot breaks for hydration — we arrived at the Old Spanish Rodeo site to hookup and house the horse for the evening in pitch dark. Getting the horse back in the trailer the next morning was a challenge and we were all wishing that Fort Collins was near. It took a few helpers to nudge Lucky into his temporary home once more, so we could head through Utah and closer to our end point with him.

Moab Utah was a few miles away, which we quickly took-in the beauty, as we enjoyed a simple breakfast at Cactus Jacks in town. Breakfast tacos are my jam and these didn’t disappoint — two tacos stuffed to the brim with scrambled eggs, chorizo and beans, then topped with tomatoes, onions and a few slices of avocado. After eating, as we wound around the mountains of Moab and quickly realized it’s definitely a spot we would like to return to and bike along the river trail head.

Just a handful of hours left until we reach our destination with Lucky — we are so all so ready to get there. Stay tuned.
