There is nothing like Homemade Apple Sauce. This fruity puree, made from whole apples, apple juice and a hint of sugar is divine right out of a bowl, or served with savory meats like pork chops and roasts, as well as spooned on top of yogurt, latkes and toast. Apple Sauce is easily purchased from the grocery store, but making it fresh at home is a totally different experience.
Homemade Apple Sauce is relatively easy to create, just slice some apples and cook them down. If you have a food mill, it makes it easy to puree the sauce until smooth. Otherwise, you can remove the skins and use your food processor, or pass the apple sauce through a fine sieve.
Apple sauce makes great gifts too. So, if you usually bring cookies or fruitcake to the holiday party, try a jar of Homemade Apple Sauce instead, and watch your friends eyes light up.
4 large apples, any variety
1 cup apple juice
1/4 cup granulated sugar
(Makes 3 cups)
1. Slice apples in half and remove core and seeds. Slice each half into quarters and place them in a medium saucepan. Add the juice and sugar to the pan and place over medium heat. Place lid ajar on top and cook for 20 minutes, or until fork tender.
2. Pour the cooked apples into food mill and crank handle until sauce is smooth. Spoon sauce into jars or store in an airtight container and refrigerate. Enjoy!
